Nym Shipyard: a privacy academy in the public squares

Nym Shipyard is being held on public platforms like Discord to teach the broadest possible amount of people about privacy.

Shipyard, the free, six-week massive online open course starting today, is part of Nym’s commitment to privacy for everyone.

It may seem at odds with this mission that many of the talks, discussions, and workshops that comprise Shipyard will be hosted on Discord, YouTube, and Twitch — platforms that aren’t exactly privacy friendly. But there is logic to this: making privacy accessible to the broadest possible number of people.

Read on for this community post by Hux of Pineapple Hive on why Nym is hosting its talks and workshops out in the open — while initiating participants into the mission of privacy today.

The public plazas of the internet

As many Shipyard attendees will be aware, privacy is an illusion on most of the internet. From the beginning, the internet was designed as a public network, and a wise assumption is that all communications are not private by default. This is the problem that Nym aims to solve.

It’s true that platforms like Discord do not preserve privacy. It is helpful to think of them as a digital equivalent to a mall — a commercial space where everything you do is visible, but where you can also meet all kinds of people.

Enabling privacy for everyone starts with making education accessible for everyone. Shipyard will be hosted in such malls and public plazas precisely to make the event as accessible as possible.

Just as a festival or a marketplace would be held in a large, public, outdoor venue — so are the events of Shipyard, where newcomers can meet and learn all about the new privacy primitives shaping the internet. In the real world too, you also trade the privacy of your home for public events.

However, anyone seeking more intimate conversations can always step in to Nym’s privacy-preserving Matrix server and Element channels — like moving from the public plaza into the Nym social club.

While much of Shipyard will be out in the open, attendees can always step inside to the quieter, more private space where you’re able to engage more deeply with other community members and the core team.

So visit Discord for the ‘public plaza’, to meet people from around the world! But beware, there are no privacy protections.

And hop into Matrix/ Element for the ‘social club’ — step inside for more intimate conversations with the Nym core community and team.

Head to Youtube and Twitch to watch the live lectures.

And visit the Nym Shipyard website for learning material, which will also be shared on Discord and Element prior to the exams.

How to maximise your privacy during Shipyard

That said, Nym is a privacy-first organisation, and it’s completely understandable if Shipyard attendees would like to join in the most private way possible.

Here’s how to privacy enhance your Shipyard experience (and thanks to officercia.eth for the detailed Telegram privacy steps — check out his page for more hands-on opsec advice.)
